In recent years registering children as a new student in the Lee County School District could take up to four hours.

The Lee County School District policy suggests that for every new student, parents must complete the registration process in person. This current school year, Lee County started with 5,800 new kindergartners.

But that's changing.

For the 2019 - 2020 school year, Lee County School District wants to ease the frustration of parents having to wait in long lines for hours to enroll their children.

Instead of waiting until March, the district moved up pre-registration to start on Oct. 22. Parents will have until Nov. 30 to pre-register their children for kindergarten.

“Gather up those documents, and you can be in and out of that office hopefully in 30 minutes or less as appose to two, three, four hours,” said Rob Spicker Lee County School District's Assistant Director, Media Relations and Public Information.

Rachael Hengstebeck who is a working mom of two children is excited about the change, “Just being able to go out there and register my son it’s my first time I’m not going to have to deal with all the masses,” said Rachael.

However, registering in advanced doesn't guarantee that parents will get their first school listed on their priority list. “It doesn’t make a difference whether you show up on the first day of open enrollment or the last day to register your child," Spicker explained.

If you're planning to enroll your children in a Lee County School here are the documents required to pre-register:

  • Physical exam (dated within the last year)
  • Florida Certificate of Immunization
  • Proof of address
  • Original birth certificate
  • Social Security Card (if available)
  • Custody documents (if applicable)

The pre-registration program is not available at every school. You have to register at any of the three Student Enrollment Offices. These offices are open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Their locations are:

  • 2855 Colonial Blvd. Fort Myers, FL 33966
  • 360 Santa Barbara Blvd. N. Cape Coral, FL 33993
  • 1262 Wings Way, Suite 207 Lehigh Acres, FL 33936
