The company raises money for breast cancer research and raises awareness. The SWFL branch released a statement to sponsors, volunteers, and donors explaining that the branch did not meet the fundraising requirements established by the foundation.
They are expected to shut down by Memorial Day and shift support to the national foundation. The closing of this branch means that for the time being there will be no more Susan G. Komen sponsored events in SWFL like the Stiletto run/walk and the Race for the Cure.
The company did stress in their letter that they were able to raise enough funds to fulfill requests from local hospitals this year. The site will also still be up as a resource for patients in the area and will be available to take donations for the national chapter.
The Susan G. Komen foundation has a goal of reducing the number of breast cancer deaths by 50 percent this year. SWFL is one of several branches merging to strengthen the national center. The foundation raised the required goal for branches which caused some branches to close.
