On Tuesday, the city council voted to enable a 6-month ban on any medical marijuana dispensaries starting a business within city limits.
This will allow time for the state legislators to iron out the role local governments have in the operation and location of dispensaries in their area. Once that is figured out, local governments can more easily move forward.
In Florida, dispensaries have to be treated like local pharmacies. Dispensaries will not have additional regulations and restrictions — only the same rules pharmacies have. The other option is for them to be banned altogether, but Fort Myers has already decided they will eventually allow them.
For now, medical marijuana cardholders can get their cannabis medication delivered from a delivery service in an area already allowing dispensaries, while the process is on hold.
