When students in Lee County head back after spring break next week, they are likely to see a new face. Deputies have been assigned to every Lee County public school – effective immediately .
There are 60 deputies in school who work as resource officers. Fourty more will be transferred in to schools temporarily until the sheriff’s office hires 40 deputies to permanently protect Lee County students and staff.
This plan includes charter schools.
And the district says there are no plans right now to arm teachers.
So, who’s paying for these new employees? The sheriff’s office says its working with the School District and Board of County Commissioners on that.
The safety plan includes more frequent and more realistic lockdown drills. One elementary teacher in Fort Myers has told us they haven’t had a drill or discussion since the shooting in Parkland.
