Ways to Keep Those Pesky Mosquitoes Away

Mosquitoes are already bad enough to deal with. So how do you take extra precautions to keep them away?

First, get rid of standing water.

“Buckets, containers, old gutters, any kind of pool toy. Anything that’s been kind of forgotten about and left to hold water in. Anything as small as a bottle cap really will hold water in it and actually breed mosquitoes,” mosquito biologist Ed Foley with the Lee County Mosquito Control unit said.

What about bug spray? Products with DEET get a bad rap, but they’re still considered very safe.

If you want an alternative, products with Picariden are considered safe and effective.

As far as products to use at home, Lowes manager Bryan said he uses Bio Advanced Complete Insect Killer.

“Being a liquid it goes into the ground a lot faster than a granulated and what really differentiate its between the others besides price is that this actually works deeper into the ground,” Bryan said.

He said it takes him about 15 to 20 minutes to spay down his entire yard and he does it every two months.

“As long you make sure it dries throughly, you’ll be fine. Just make sure you don’t eat it out of the bag or drink it right out of the bottle,” Bryan said.
