Taxes can be a pretty difficult time for a lot of people. Now, United Way Is offering to file and prepare people’s taxes for free. If your household income was less than $66,000 last year then you qualify.
It’s part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). The means that IRS-certified volunteers will be able to prepare and e-file your taxes. This is going on at United Way locations in Lee, Hendry, and Charlotte county by appointment only. So, you can make one by calling 239-433-3900 or do it online .
You’ll need some things before you go:
-Valid, official photo identification (you & your spouse, if filing jointly)
-Social Security Number (SSN) card for everyone on your return
-Previous year’s tax return All W-2s for current tax year
-Joint returns require both filers to be present to sign the return
-Voided check or account number card to direct deposit your refund (This is optional, but allows you to get your refund fast.)
-Form 1095-A if you purchased marketplace health insurance
-Form 1098-Mortgage Interest, property taxes, closing statement
-If you had child care or dependent care expenses, please bring the name, address and tax ID or SSN/ITIN of the care provider
If you have family outside of the area, the IRS still offers VITA services. You can head over to IRS.gov and click on ‘Get Free Tax Preparation Help’. There you put in your zip code and location options will appear. These options are geared towards incomes that at $54,000 or below.
