The History Behind the "City of Palms"

If you live in Fort Myers you’ve probably taken a drive down McGregor Boulevard.

It’s hard to miss the beautiful palm trees that line the 14 mile stretch from Punta Rassa to Fort Myers.

What you might not know is Thomas Edison is the reason behind Fort Myers nickname, “City of Palms.” Edison planted around 200 royal palms shortly after buying property in the area back in 1885.

Although many of the palm trees have been replaced, it’s believed that one might be an original Edison planted.
