'Stand Your Ground' Law Back in the Spot Light

Florida’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ law has been the center of controversy quite a few times.

Situations like the death of Trayvon Martin in 2012, the Pasco County movie theater shooting in 2014 and a recent deadly parking lot dispute that happened near Clearwater, FL have some people second-guessing the law.

Hello SWFL wanted to lay out the law clearly for you.

The ‘Stand Your Ground’ law protects you in acts of self-defense anywhere when you fear force will be used against you or you fear for your life. That can be in a house, park or even a parking lot.

The law used to state it was up to the defense to prove you feared for your life.

Now the burden of proof is on the prosecutor to determine whether or not it was self-defense.
