You lock your doors to stay safe, you take medicine to stay healthy, but what if there was a card that could protect your purchases at the gas pump?
Credit card skimmers have been a problem throughout Southwest Florida, from Cape Coral to Punta Gorda and Fort Myers. Local governments have tried to come up with rules to protect you and your wallet.
The “Skim Reaper” is trying to solve that problem. A couple of engineers at the University of Florida are testing it. According to the engineers, the plastic card is the same size as a credit card. You would insert it into the reader before you use it to see if it’s unsafe.
The cards are still in the testing phase in New York, so how much the card might cost and any downsides are unknown at this point. If all goes well, the product may be available in the next six to nine months.
For now, here are a couple things to remember when you stop to fill up:
- Wiggle the card reader. If it’s loose, there’s a good chance scammers have tampered with it.
- Use pumps that gas station attendants can see.
