Fort Myers Fire Department and Lee County Emergency Medical Services held an active shooter training exercise on Tuesday — and here’s what we learned after participating:
- The goal is to get police to run towards gunfire and stop the killing
- Police are trying to get the shooter to give up, run, and/or fire fight
- Officials are trained to go past victims to search for the shooter (EMS will come in later)
- The number one place for active shooter situations to happen is business not schools
They simulated a shooting scenario in close quarters that required tactical intervention, medical treatment and public safety precautions.
