Put that $6 toll fee back in your pocket!
The cost of accessing Sanibel Island on the Sanibel Causeway is being waved for a couple hours this weekend.
The toll fee will be waived from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Lee County is partnering with the South Florida Community Foundation to foot the bill.
“This is a slow time for the island, I don’t care if you’re at Fort Myers Beach or Sanibel or anywhere,” Larry Kiker said, who is the District 3 Lee County commissioner. “This is a great program to get people in the cars and going out there.”
This could be a big boost for business, as Lake Okeechobee water release discolored Sanibel Island waters earlier this year, along with other environmental problems that compelled tourist to cancel vacations.
“The red tide has had a big effect on our business," David Joffe said, the owner of She Sells Sea Sails on Sanibel Island. "We’re used to being a very busy store even in the off-season."
Both men agree it’s a step in the right direction to attract visitors. While Joffe agrees that the two hours where the toll fee will be waived is a good idea to increase visitors to Sanibel Island, he believes more can be done.
“If someone’s going to spend the day and have dinner, which would be nice during that hour, you have to extend it a little bit and it has to be at least to 6 p.m.,” Joffe said.
