Rain storms bring lower fire danger for Southwest Florida

With all the rain comes less fire danger!

The storms on Sunday and Monday took the drought index from 517 to 366, meaning less fire risk for us.

For comparison, 700 is the same extreme as drought conditions in a desert. Fort Myers reached 621 last month.

However, South Trail Assistant Fire Chief Gene Rogers said firefighters are still keeping a close eye on the index.

Since there have only been a few days of rain, the drought index could creep back up.
