In Southwest Florida, National Mutt Day is celebrated on December 1. Lee County Domestic Animal Services and Collier County Domestic Animal Services are hosting adoptions for the special day.
Now, with the holiday season just a few weeks away, you might be thinking a pet is a good idea for a gift. “At Christmas time, don’t get a puppy as a gift. That’s what usually ends up in our shelters in January,” said Karen Fordiani of Lee County Domestic Animal Services.
Throughout Southwest Florida, there are at least 5,000 dogs living in shelters and in need of a good place to call home.
In Collier County there are currently 233 pets at Domestic Animal Services, and the majority of those will be available for adoption during the adoption event. To date, the agency had 1,693 adoptions and 757 transfers.
