“When they started calling me throughout the week they’re like ‘we haven’t had showers in days’ and stuff you know. So there’s a need for it,” Drew Broderick said.

A shower. It’s a basic necessity. And after Hurricane Michael slammed into Florida’s panhandle, people there are still without water and electricity.

No running water means no showers, and Drew knows the struggle. He was once homeless.

“The worst part of it was not being able to take showers or knowing where your next shower is. so that’s where I came up with the idea for Showers for Homeless,” Broderick. He started the organization specifically in Fort Myers because he saw this city as having a history of birthing world-changing ideas.

He remodeled his old construction trailer to become a portable shower house for the homeless. It hasn’t been used in about a year and a half, because Drew went through some tough times and the usual crowd that used it started showering at other places.

But now, the trailer is being put to good use again by being brought up to the panhandle.

“We’re getting it together and making it happen and gonna make it up there this weekend and see if we can help these people out,” he said.

“If you get a phone call from somebody that’s said they haven’t had a shower in two weeks, you move them out and get the shower up there,” Lucy Bonsanto said.

Drew and Lucy have known each other for years.

“In the panhandle right now, we have people that are suffering. This is not acceptable,” Bonsanto said.

Lucy’s Love & Light Ministries — with help from other ministries and organizations — have already brought up two loads of supplies to the panhandle. And another is on the way.

“Praise God that this shower unit will be going up,” she said. “Not only will it be going up, it will be staying there until they have proper relief.” Lucy is fighting her own battle with cancer, but that doesn’t stop her.

“This is what I do so if I can help out and do my part, then that’s what I’m gonna do,” Broderick said.

The shower, along with another round of supplies, will head up Friday. Donations can be sent to Lucy’s Love & Light Ministries at PO Box 4312, North Fort Myers, FL 33918.
