Lehigh Acres wants to give you a warm welcome with some new signs.
But some voters are saying a referendum on the current ballot is kind of confusing.
It’s called the “Lehigh Acres Signage Referendum” and it will do one thing: create four welcome signs.
“We now have a defined identity or a defined area as far as the state of Florida is concerned,” Michael Welch with the Board of Commissioners said.
If you vote yes, then the Lehigh Acres Municipal Improvement District can create signs along roads coming into Lehigh Acres. This includes Lee Boulevard, State Road 82, Joel Boulevard, and State Road 80.
You’re paying for the signs, but the money is already budgeted. So a “yes” vote won’t raise your taxes.
“For any particular monument, it has to fit within our budget,” Welch said.
So why not just build the signs if the money is already in the budget?
By law, the government can’t. The commissioners need your approval, according to a resolution put in place in 2015.
“We have to go and ask the electors of the district to take that power over, so right now we’re asking for signage authority,” Welch said.
If you vote “no”, the money stays in the budget.
