Lee Health has started using a new blood test that increases patient safety and reduces contamination rates.
The new technology will lower healthcare costs and reduce unnecessary antibiotic use. Since it was put in place, there’s been an 83 percent reduction in false positive diagnostic results for bloodstream infections like sepsis.
The collection system has been put in place at the emergency departments at Lee Memorial Hospital, Cape Coral Hospital, Gulf Coast Medical Center and HealthPark Medical Center.
Sepsis is a multi-system organ dysfunction caused by infection, and every year tens of millions of patients in the U.S. require a blood test to help diagnose these infections.
The cost of a single false-positive blood test can be around $10,000. Lee Health said the cost savings could be between $4.3 and $10.8 million annually.
