ICE Hits the Streets of Immokalee

Several Facebook groups in Southwest Florida shared that ICE officers were detaining undocumented people in Immokalee.

Many of the people living in Immokalee are from Cuba, Haiti, and Mexico. Immokalee is usually referred to as a city of immigrants and most of them make a living working in the agriculture industry.

The streets of Immokalee are usually bustling but because of ICE’s presences people are staying home.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency was created in 2003 with the intention to secure America’s border.

Since 2016, ICE has been working on a new strategic plan that will be carried out into the year 2020 . Its top two “strategic goals” are:

  • Counterterrorism
  • Protect the borders through efficient immigration enforcement.

In March, more than 271 people were arrested in the state of Florida. And of those reported, none of them were from Immokalee or Collier County.

ICE did not confirm if officers are in fact staked out in Immokalee. However, the law enforcement agency did say they have operations on a daily basis.
