As hurricane season begins, it’s important to know where the closest shelter to you is.
“Keep updates on those social media posts on where the shelters are whether they’re full or at capacity,” Jill Palmer with American Red Cross said.
To go to a county emergency shelter, you do not need to pre-register and there is no requirements based on where you live. There’s one exception — if you know someone who has disabilities they have to pre-register, because only certain shelters are set up to help those who have special needs.
“You’re going to want to bring enough supplies for yourself and your family for at least three days,” she said.
The American Red Cross Florida’s Southern Gulf Chapter works with emergency management teams throughout Southwest Florida.
