Issa Gomes works in the Collier County Department of health. She says HIV isn’t just a problem from the 1980’s and 1990’s.
“In the United States, we get around 4,000 new infections every year. We’ve had in Collier County an increase of cases in the past few years. Mainly Hispanics, men that have sex with other men.”
Gomes says HIV is a problem in Southwest Florida and numbers in other parts of the state are staggering.
In Collier County, there are about 50 new cases reported each year.
In Lee County, there are close to 3,000 people living with HIV.
To gain awareness of National #HIVTestingDay, which takes place on June 27th, Collier Department of Health and other agencies are offering free rapid testing starting this week.
Collier County also offers the tests on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays FOR $20.
