The city of Fort Myers Beach is considering a plan from the Marine Resources Task Force to encourage local business to replace plastic shopping bags with reusable canvas bags.
A representative from Keep Lee County Beautiful says the plastic bags being used never dissolve. They instead break down into fibers. Marine life confuses the remnants of food and then eat it. Effectively poisoning them.
People we spoke to today at Fort Myers Beach completely support the push.
And the cost is a factor. Right now, the Marine Resources task force is looking for sponsors to supplement the cost of the canvas bags.
Just for a comparison, you can get 1,000 plastic clear bags for $46 on unline.com.
Currently, a state law prevents any city or county from banning plastic bags so if this change is going to happen, it would have to be voluntary.
