Domestic violence is a problem all over the country and in Florida. We wanted to know how many incidents happen in Southwest Florida.
Domestic violence is a problem all over the country.
And here in Florida? Police answered more than 100,000 domestic violence calls in 2016.
We hear so much about it I wanted to know exactly how many incidents happened in our area.
So I went digging.
I looked through the Lee County Sheriff’s Office incident reports for the first 14 days of April.
I found out about 8% of those calls were domestic.
That’s not even including all the other calls police responded to like a shooting or stabbing that ended up being domestic related.
I also wanted to know if there are any organizations in the area that help victims of domestic violence. Well, there are.
Abuse Counseling and Treatment is known as ACT.
It’s helped thousands of women and men in Lee, Hendry, and Glades counties for 40 years.
I talked to the executive director but, there was an audio problem.
So here’s a brief look at what Jennifer Benton told me.
The ACT offers help to any victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or human trafficking.
It has three emergency shelters, offers counseling, therapy, and information for those who need it.
There is also a 24-hr hotline for those who need help or just need someone to talk to.
Domestic violence does not discriminate. It can happen to anyone anywhere.
So if you’re in a domestic violence situation there are places that can help and people who care.
All you have to do is reach out.
