Digging for Recyclables Cost Lee County Taxpayers a Ton of Cash

On any given day, Lee County County trash collectors have to sort through at least 10,000 tons of trash to find recyclable products. The entire process costs taxpayers at least $360,000 a year.

In Lee County, recycling bins are given to homeowners in single family homes, duplexes, and triplexes.

However, some apartment dwellers throughout Lee County are not supplied with recycling bins, which causes a lot of recyclable trash having to be hand sorted.

“We are costing ourselves money to sort that all out,” said Molly Schweers, Lee County Solid Waste Facility communication specialist.

“We are creating our own problem regardless of what type of housing we call home.”

Schweers explained that recycling is not a county-wide requirement.

“Our local ordinance does require that multi-family dwellings provide recycling for their residents.,” she said.

“We do not require that they sort that material. That is the responsibility of each resident.”
