The city of Fort Myers Beach is one step closer to implementing its reusable bag program.

It’s a part of the plastic-free initiative spearheaded by the Marine Resources Task Force, a citizen-advisory group to the island.

The group met Wednesday night to finalize the design of the canvas tote.

It plans to purchase 5,000 reusable bags by the end of the year and the city is paying for the first batch.

The bags will be handed out for free at various locations on the island. Some spots include farmer’s markets, hotels, and the library.

The goal is to increase community awareness in hopes that people will start phasing out the use of plastic bags.

In the future the city hopes to partner with Publix Supermarkets. This is the city’s solution to continue its eco-friendly efforts since state law says plastic bags can’t be banned.
