Blood Donations: Red Cross Seeing a Shortage of Summer Donors

The American Red Cross is facing a shortage of blood donations this summer.

On their website , they wrote that blood donations have fallen short of expectations for the past two months, resulting in around 61,000 fewer donations than needed.

Blood shortages also tend to happen around holidays.

The Red Cross says they provide about 40 percent of our nation’s blood and blood components. Red blood cells have to be used within 42 days and platelets have to be used in five days. Plasma can be stored up to a year.
