Mother’s Day has a history! In 1858, a young homemaker named Anna Jarvis organized “Mother’s Work Days” to improve the sanitation and avert deaths from disease-bearing insects and seepage of polluted water, according to the National Women’s History Project .
In 1872, Boston poet Julia Ward Howe established a special day for mothers not long after the bloody Franco-Prussian War.
And then in 1905 when Ann Jarvis died, her daughter began a campaign that resulted in Congress passing a Mother’s Day resolution in 1914.
