The Greater Naples YMCA, Collier County Sheriff’s Office and the North Collier Fire Rescue District are joining forces to host a 9/11 Memorial Stair Run Sunday, September 9th. This is a tribute to the 343 firefighters, 63 Police Officers & 8 EMT’s who gave the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.
The event is to raise money for the families of the fallen first responders. Danny Soto, Marketing Director at the Y says, “Money from the event will be raised and donated to the collier county 100 club.”
“We have quite a large influence of firefighters and police officers from the NYC area," said Hedi Roderick who's the wellness director at the Y, "And we just want them to know we don’t ever plan to forget.”
The run will begin in the east parking lot then go up the east staircase which is by the main entrance, across the rooftop, back down the west staircase and around the campus. The 8 laps that go around the main campus will equal the 110 flights of stairs at the world trade center.
If you want to participate for individuals it's $20 and $40 for families. Check-in time is from 8:00 to 8:50 am. The opening ceremony begins at 9:00 am with the Ringing of the Bell Ceremony, Flyover & National Anthem. At 9:30 am the warm-up and run will begin.
"It's a lot of stairs but at the end of the day when you’re going through it, you’re really thinking about the memory of those people that traveled those stairs and ended up losing their lives," said Corporal Natalie Ashby Collier from the Collier County Sheriffs Office, "So it’s one of those things where you’re so emotional about it that it pushes you through.”
