One of humans most delicious creations. Here in Southwest Florida, we’re getting a new addition to the donut game.
If you don’t know by know, Krispy Kreme is coming to Southwest Florida, opening in late October at the Grand Central complex along Cleveland Avenue.
But we had some questions about where else you could get a donut here. HelloSWFL spoke with people that live in the area to compile and highlight some of the best, original donut shops.
Our first stop was Bennett’s Fresh Roast in Fort Myers.
“We make all of our donuts from scratch," Bob Grissinger said, who is the owner Bennett’s Fresh Roast.
Grissinger prepares his donuts at 11 p.m. to be devoured by customers the next day.
Patrons who walk into Bennett's Fresh Roast are greeted with the sweet smell of frosting and recently brewed coffee that permeates in the air. More than a dozen delectable donuts in various shapes and sizes are laid in organized rows in a glass case visible upon entry. Orders are being shouted among staff while customers amicably engage in conversation as they consume these delicious treats.
The dessert chef is a big believer in fresh ingredients, such as eggs and cream. Even the cake yeast is fresh.
They have some pretty creative donut flavors - almond coconut, key lime, mudslide, s’mores and pumpkin pie.
They also have donut flavors you can find at other shops, but Grissinger said they try to creatively do it bigger and better.
“When you try it you’ll notice a particularly smokey quality to that bacon that is an incredible balance to the sweet maple icing that’s on top of the donut,” Grissigner said.
And they have their own twist on a Southwest Florida original.
"We have an orange crunch donut which we’re paying homage to the orange crunch cake that is famous out at the bubble room out on Captiva,” he said.
Our next stop was Duck Donut in Estero.
Duck Donuts makes your donut fresh. The donut machine creates the sweet ring shape cake as soon as an order is made. Once the machine crafts the masterpiece, customers can decide how they want to customize the donut with several options of frosting and toppings.
The original donut does not disappoint.
These aren’t the only two options for donuts in the competitive Southwest Florida food and drink industry. Tell us your favorite by writing us a comment on Facebook.
Otherwise, enjoy your donuts!
