I’m proud of the growth within SWFL. There are two all-new events hitting our area this weekend, and they both are culturally enriching and uniting. Top off the weekend with a family day or a day of peace (and shopping)
Latin American Traditional Takeover
I know that saying “Day of the Dead” may freak some of you out a little bit. But, don’t freak. Instead of mourning those who have died, this Latin American tradition celebrates the lives of the deceased through traditional, carnival-like fun, music and entertainment. Oh. And food. Because I wouldn’t tell you about an event that didn’t have food. I know this may sound dark, but it’s going to be fun! I promise. Also, I hope you get a chance to meet Yolanda – the organizer being this first-of-a-kind event for SWFL. She’s leading the mission behind the event, Sofie’s Cause, which raises funds for women facing uterine cancer. Themed makeup and costumes are strongly encouraged. Free. Friday & Saturday. Nov. 17 & 18. 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. 4204 Cleveland Ave. Fort Myers.
Okay. I’m not going to lie. This wasn’t something that I was super thrilled about…like c’mon. You can probably tell that comics aren’t my thing. But, after talking to other people on our team, who are stoked about SWFL having its own Comic Con, I’m thinking this is going to be awesome! Expect Geek Speed Dating, Batman Returns Batmobile, Back to the Future’s DeLorean DMC-12, TMNT Van, R2D2, Darth Vader, Knight Rider’s KITT car, the creator of Deadpool, the creator & artist of Ren & Stimpy, Wrestler Tito Santana & Cosplay. Listen. This is just like a sampling of what’s going to be there, and even if you have minimum knowledge of the pop-culture community…you’ve probably heard of Comic Con and know that this will be way cool for everyone. “Why so serious?” – Joker $20 General Admission. $25 Geek Speed Dating. Other packages available. Saturday, Nov. 18. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Holiday Inn Fort Myers Airport. 9931 Interstate Commerce Drive. Fort Myers.
Fort Myers Fair At Fenway South
One thing that never gets old to the children in my life is the fair. I’m like “Guys. We’ve done this one million times!”, and yet they’re already begging me to take them this weekend. The great thing about the fair is that you truly can’t go wrong. In addition to a pirate show, a showcase of grizzly bears, a magic show, and a hypnosis show, you’ll find your classic fair finds including rides, petting zoos and carnival food (If you get a funnel cake, can you grab one for me? I’m on a diet ‘til next week.). $8 admission for ages 3 & up. Pricing for rides is separate. Friday – Sunday. Nov. 16th – Nov. 19th. JetBlue Park at Fenway South. 11500 Fenway South Dr. Fort Myers. Namaste, fellow artsy people. I loved stumbling across this event because the first thing it says is “community, unity, music, food, tribe and more!”. My inner hippie/yogi/just wants peace 24-7 self is like YES, PLEASE! This outdoor bizarre, known as Shanti Sunday Social Market Day, is brought to you by local vendors, artisans, DJ’s, organic food and reiki and treasures waiting to be discovered by you and I. Market Day sounds awesome for the person looking for cool finds in a non-traditional setting. If you’re looking for a place that offers a good vibe, with an energy that speaks to your inner artistic self, then this where you want to be this weekend. Free. Sunday. 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. CasaShanti. 2052 Cottage St. Fort Myers.
