Free Yoga Classes in Fort Myers

Before kids and when I had more disposable income, I enjoyed doing yoga at a fancy fitness center. I wasn’t a Yogi by any means, but I went when I could. That was back when I had endless me time. The days when I could have a leisurely brunch with bottomless mimosas, *sigh*. Now, I see a chalkboard sign outside of a fancy restaurant advertising that they are open for brunch, and I want to kick it.

But I digress, four years after my twins came into our lives like a tornado, I’m finally looking to get back into yoga. I’m hesitant to commit to a studio knowing I won’t be going regularly enough to make it cost efficient. I’m also thriftier than ever. Fortunately, there are plenty of free or nearly free yoga opportunities throughout Lee County.

Lee Health’s Healthy Life Center at Coconut Point mall across from the Play Area offers guests at all skill levels weekly free yoga Mondays at 3:30 or 5 p.m in a peaceful indoor setting. You can reserve your space starting the Tuesday prior by giving 239-495-4475 a call. You do not have to be a Lee Health member or resident to enjoy this free class either. The center also offers an ongoing calendar of events from free seminars on nutrition and wellness, as well as health screenings and more. View a list of upcoming events at the Healthy Life Center.

Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa in Bonita Springs hosts monthly community yoga sessions on Sundays in conjunction with a charity fundraiser. Admission is always free with a suggested donation for the connected cause from Relay for Life toThe Naples Shelter for Abused Women and Children. Yoga visitors are also encouraged to explore the resort, have a bite to eat, visit Stillwater Spa or their fantastic coffee bar, Cool Beans. Maybe just one day, I’ll get to do both yoga and brunch there after! You can find a complete schedule of their yoga events on their Facebook page.

We selected yoga because it has a unique way of bringing people together with a mindset of wellness, generosity and community and share the natural beauty of Southwest Florida,” explains Patricia George, Manager of Marketing Communication at Hyatt Regency Coconut Point.

Can’t escape the family for some yoga time? That’s okay, at Miromar Outlets you can have them join in too for Family Yoga with Kathryn on select Saturday mornings. A free 45-minute beginners’ yoga class, for families with toddlers to tweens, to engage in healthy bonding time. Check their events page for upcoming dates.

The Green Market takes place every Saturday, all year long, at the Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers. The market hosts a popular, free yoga class on the lawn at 9:30 a.m. All levels are welcome at this open class and no reservation required. After class, you can wander through the farmers market of locally grown, caught and cultivated foods and other products available to sample and purchase. There is usually live entertainment and cooking demos too.

For only $12, you can experience Yoga on the River with Karen who holds classes Tuesday/Thursday on the Caloosahatchee River East on Palm Beach Blvd. at sunset, 6:30 p.m. Classes are for women ONLY and the first time is complimentary. The class features gentle yoga for those looking for a way to gently finish your day in peace. RSVPs are required by 4 p.m. on the class day via a text to 239-560-4181.

“When I walked into our new home and looked at the view of the yard and the water, I had a vision of yoga in the back yard. I had been wanting to do more yoga so on a whim I decided to get a certification and make that happen,” shared yoga instructor Karen Zeigler.

Worst case, you can always do yoga at home. I purchased Jillian Michaels’ Yoga Meltdown DVD years ago, but I’m gonna be honest, I have yet to even take it out of the shrink wrap. I find it’s hard to motivate myself with so many distractions and chores to do at home.

With all of the above options available for free and right in our backyard, no more excuses to Namast’ay in bed! 😉
